Mothers' Union

We meet on the first Monday of the month at 7.45pm and the first Thursday at 2.15pm. You can find out more about the Mothers' Union at St. Peter's from the Parish Office and from our programme.

The Mothers’ Union was started in England in 1876 by Mary Sumner – a vicar’s wife. Mary brought women together for mutual support and learning so that they could be good wives and mothers. The MU has moved on since 1876 and now we welcome both men and women members who have been baptised and regardless of their marital status. Our branch at St. Peter’s has been flourishing since 1897.

Today the MU is an international charity with 3.6 million members in 77 countries world wide - they produce a quarterly magazine  “Home and Family” with articles on topical subjects and their new logo is “Caring for Christian Families World Wide” – because it is not enough to be concerned – we have to care enough to become involved - in whichever way we can and the MU today is involved in many different projects both locally and further afield.

So what do we do ?  We help in Toddler Groups and organise Parenting Courses – we help in prison crèches and tea bars  - we pay for children and parents in need of a break  to go on holiday and want to get “Away From It All “(AFIA)  We support the MU Literacy and Development Programme in third world countries Comic Relief agreed to fund 75% of the Mothers’ Union Literacy and Development Programme in Burundi Malawi and Sudan over the next 5 years- at a total cost of £780,000 this is a well deserved recognition for the MU work enabling thousands of learners to get involved in local projects  such as – clean water /communal taps; re-forestation;  HIV/ Aids programmes; neighbourhood watch in civil war areas; and other schemes which enable people to live in dignity and make a valuable contribution to their local community  We also give practical support for women in refuges who have been abused and need a little space on their own; we make toiletry bags for emergency patients and knit bonnets and jackets for premature babies; we even have a “Virtual Baby “ doll which we loan out to schools doing Parenting Courses which helps young people to learn about caring and responsibility in family Life.
