Choir News
Earley St Peter's Church Choir is a mixed choir of all ages from juniors upwards, run by David Price (Organist and Director of Music) and Maggie Nunn (Choir Director). The choir sings at church services on Sunday (10.00 am and 6.30 pm) as well as at special services (for example, weddings and some midweek services). We sing Choral Evensong, usually monthly, (followed by refreshments at one of our members' houses) and occasionally join with choirs from other parishes in the Diocese for joint services. We also sing elsewhere for occasional services, and most recently sang Choral Evensong at Portsmouth Cathedral in April 2011.
The Choir is affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music and participates in the Voice for Life scheme which provides a sound basis for the theory and practice of singing through various levels. We usually attend the annual Diocesan Choirs' Festival, which provides a wonderful opportunity to learn new repertoire under the direction of a leading cathedral organist - in October 2011 this was held at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford.
We do ask that adults joining us have choral singing experience and are able to read music but hope that junior members will gradually learn this skill during the time they spend with us.
We are also pleased to help and advise wedding couples in the choice of music for their special day, and take great pleasure in supporting them on the day itself with a full choir to help the service go with a swing!
We have an active social life, so it's not all hard work - we have an annual party, and occasional choir outings. We give concerts once or twice a year in aid of the church and other charities, which give us the chance to learn more varied and lighter musical items and provide a chance for choristers who are also instrumentalists to gain experience in performing.
The choir currently has some 36 members, but we are always looking for new recruits in all voices. At the moment we would particularly like to hear from tenors and have vacancies for children from the age of 7 upwards. If you are at all interested in joining us, or if you have a child who is musical and might like to give choral singing a try, please get in touch so that we can have an informal chat. We welcome university students and enjoy the diversity of experience which they can provide.
Choir practice is on a Wednesday night from 7.15 to 8.30 pm with additional practices when required at busy times.
